This great earl is characterized as "the wisest of all men betwixt this a nd Jerusalem, in worldly affairs; famous for knowledge, plausible in speec h, skillful in craft, discreetly provident, ingeniously subtle, excelli ng for prudence, profound in council, and of great wisdom." In the latt er days of his life he became a monk in the abbey of Preaux,

Beaumont, Robert of Also called Count of Meulan which he became through h is mother. Brother of Henry, son of Roger. Earl of Leicester from 1107; di ed 1118. Robert became close advisor of Henry I. His twin children, Robe rt who inherited the title, and Walerun, Count Meulan and later Earl of Wo rcester were a great influence on King Stephen. Gilbert de Clare was a bro ther-in-law; their half brother William de Warenne became second Earl of S urrey. Holdings in Leics., Northants., and Warwicks.
