Henry de Ferriers, son of Walcheline de Feriers, obtained from Williamt he Conqueror, a grant of Tutbury Castle, co. Stafford, with extensiveposse ssions in other shires, of which one hundred and fourteen manorswere in De rbyshire. He must have been of considerable rank, not onlyfrom those enorm ous grants, but from the circumstances of his beingone of the commissione rs appointed by King William to make the GrandSurvey, the Domesday Recor d, of the kingdom. He was the founder of thepriory of Tutbury, which he li berally endowed.

Henri li sire de Ferrieres," and he who then held Tillieres. Hewas seigne ur de
Saint Hilaire de Ferriers near Bernay and the son, ofWalkelin de Ferrer s, who
fell in a contest with Hugh de Montfort Learly in the reign of Duke Willia m, in
which both of these noblemenwere killed. He had an older brother William,
also reported afflastings, undoubtedly well advanced in years at that tim e, who
diedbefore the compilation of Domesday, where his name does not
appear.Henry de Ferrers received 210 manors, 114 of which were in
Derbyshire.The seat of his chief barony was Tutbury Castle in
Staffordshire,which had previously belonged to Hugh Lupus, but upon the
latterbecoming the Earl of Chester in 107 1, it was granted to Henry deFer rers,
who founded nearby a Cluniac monastery. Henry was appointedone of the
commissioners for the general survey in 1085 and richlyendowed the prio ry of
Tutbury in 1089. He married Bertawhose identity is unknown, by
whom he had-t-hree -sorta: EnguenulfWilliam, and Robert"

Henry "took part in the Conquest and held a great fief in themidland s. He established his chief seat at Tutbury Castle,Staffordshire, on the D erbyshire border, and founded there a Cluniacpriory." f-Encyclopaedia Brit annica, 1956, 9:183) Henry, Sire deFerrieres, held Tillieres, etc. and bro ught many warriors to theConquest, for which he received 2 10 manors, 1 14 of these inDerbyshire. Henry was one of the commissioners for the gener al surveyof 1085.
