One record in the Family Hist ory Library lists Isaac's birthplace as
Beverwyck, Rensselaer County, which w as a part of New Netherland.
(Beverwyck was renamed Albany after the British took over New Netherland.)
Genealogies in "The Compendium of American Genealog y" disagee on who his
father was; some list Philippe Anton DuTrieux while ot hers list the
Philip DuTrieux who was baptised in 1619. Isaac, therefore, co uld be
either the son or the grandson of Philippe Anton DuTrieux. The
Asso ciation of Philippe DuTrieux Descendants list him as the son of the
older Phi lippe but one of the witnesses at his baptism was Sarah
DuTrieux, the daughte r of the older Philippe and sister of the younger
man. This would seem to in dicate that the younger man was the father; it
seems unlikely that a father w ould use one of his children as a witness
to the baptism of another child, bu t it is quite common for a father to
have one of his siblings serve as a witn ess to the baptism of his child.
Supporting the argument that he and his broth er were the sons of the
younger Philippe DuTrieux is the fact that research h as found court
records stating that he was the cousin of Jacobus Peek.
Vol. IV states that he went to Schenectady in 1670 and was taken prisoner
to Canad a during the Buckendal massacre, 1690. However, Volume V changes
this histor y, stating that he was "an original settler of Schenectady,
defender at time of massacre in 1690, and escaped to the fort at Albany
with news of the battl e." Other records state that he didn't go to
Schenectady until after 1677.
Vol. VII states that he was the first white child born in New Amsterdam,
but that is contradicted by a history of New York that I have read.
However, it i s possible that it is technically correct if the name "New
Amsterdam" was use d earlier. It also states that he settled in Rotterdam
in 1670; I'm certain that this was the town in New York, just south of
Schenectady, and not in Hol land.
He apparently was born on April 21, 1642 and baptised three days later.
The spelling of the family name was changed in this generation to Truax.
The Association of Philippe du Trieux Descendants says that he settled in
Schenec tady in 1666 and Rotterdam in 1670. He and Jacobus Peek bought the
2nd flat o n the south side of the Mohawk River 1670, but the date
apparently should hav e been stated as 1677.
Patricia A. Truax states that he married in either 1670 or 1677 and that
he died in 1706. The 1670 marriage date seems unlikely, gi ven the
reported birth dates of his wife and children.
