Notes:

Charles, from the beginning, was always intended to succeede his father, C harlemagne. He often accompained his father, and even led some of the forc es in the Saxon campaign in 783-4. He spent Christmas in 800 at Rome wh en his father was crowned Emperor to be coronated king himself. Charlemagn e's will of 806 set up equal divisions of his Empire for his children Char les, Pepin, and Louis. Louis was the only one that out-lived his father. C harles died of a stroke in December of 811, a little over two years befo re his father.
