He was also Lord of Tonbridge & Cardigan.

After Richard's death, his extensive properties in Normandy and England we re divided between his two eldest sons. The Norman fiefs of Bienfaite a nd Orbec passed to Roger, while Gilbert, inherited the English honors of C lare and Tonbridge.

While Gilbert fitz Richard I found himself at odds with the Conqueror's su ccessor, William Rufus, he and other members of the family enjoyed great f avor with Rufus' successor King Henry I. In 1110 Gilbert was granted the l ordship of Ceredigion (Cardigan) in southwestern Wales, and immediately em barked upon an intensive campaign to subjugate the area.

Clare, Gilbert de Son of Richard; conquered lands in Wales to become Ea rl of Pembroke. Gilbert held Tonbridge Castle against Rufus in 1088 aft er William's death, but was reconciled later and also served Henry I. Di ed 1115.
