Lord of Braiose, Lord of Bramber and Gower, Lord of Brecon, Over Gwent a
nd the Three castles. Known as the "rebel baron." He was Sheriff of Hertfo
rdshire 1192-99 and 1206-07, Justice Itinerant for Stafffordshire 1196. Ac
quired full rights in Barntable 1196 and received the Honor of the Limeri
ck 1200. He is claimed to have played a vital role in securing the thro
ne for King John, becoming a favorite at the height of his power in 1206.
"In 1207 he suddenly fell from grace, largely because of his failure to me
et the charges on his estates. His English estates were distrained and t
he royal army occupied his Welsh territories, William and his family fleei
ng to Ireland. Here they were pursued, his wife and eldest son being captu
red, eventually to be starved to death at Windsor [or at Corfe]. William h
