William II was named heir by his father in place of his elder brother, Rob
ert, who received the Duchy of Normandy. He successfully crushed a rebell
ion in Normandy early in his rule, as well as repulsing two invasions l
ed by Malcolm III of Scotland.
Ascended the throne in 1087 and reigned 13 years. William II, son of Will
iam the Conqueror, never married. His brother, Henry I, is suspected to ha
ving orchestrated the tragic hunting "accident" that killed William in 110
0.
Called Rufus because of his fiery red complexion.
